Bronterre O’Brien Grave Location

The Irish radical and Chartist, James Bronterre O’Brien, is buried in Abney Park cemetery in London. The grave is not the easiest to find, so below is a map with some photographs. I was able to visit it last week.

The cemetery is in Stoke Newington, less than five minutes’ walk from Stoke Newington Overground station which leaves from Liverpool Street Station.

The grave is located at the blue dot (map kindly supplied by Abney Park cemetery). You’ll see from the map that there are “roads,” “paths,” and “walks” marked on it. The roads are paved, while the paths and walks are non-paved tracks.

Once you enter the cemetery, turn left at the first junction, then turn right at the first non-paved grass/mud track you see. Walk along until you get to another junction and O’Brien’s grave is on the left.

“James Bronterre O’Brien departed this life December 23rd 1864 Aged 67. This life was grand His death was sad and dreary.”
